Albie—The Library Kingdom

Papa says the library has two rules: no running and no yelling. That’s it. I think there’s a secret third rule: no having a bad time.

The library smelled like paper and floor polish. Warm. Quiet. Waiting. It sounded like a giant holding its breath. We passed the big desk. The librarian smiled at Papa and tapped the date stamp on her palm, warming it up.

“Choose wisely,” Papa said. “You can only take out six.” Six? That’s like telling a squirrel to pick two acorns.

Nomi crouched low and zoomed to picture books. Rock faced a tall shelf, blinking slow. He always ends up in gardening. GO held a newspaper upside down. He said the news behaved better that way. Papa drifted to the map shelf. He always does.

My fingers chose before my brain did. Some spines were smooth. Some were bumpy. One was still warm from another hand, a quiet kind of warm, like it had been waiting.

Then I found it—a book about a boy who built a boat in his living room with a cat wearing boots. I didn’t need to open it. The cover said: pick me.

I grabbed too many books. Seven. Maybe eight. They slid around in my arms, trying to escape. Then I remembered: six. I stood there. The books waited. I waited. One smelled too basement. One had a cover that shouted. I put them back slow. The boat-book stayed.

We met in the middle, right where families end up without trying. Papa with his atlas. Nomi with her stack. GO with upside-down news. Rock with lettuce dreams. Me with my boat-book.

The librarian stamped our cards. ka-THUNK. ka-THUNK. ka-THUNK. Six new doors each. All ours. Papa looked at me. I looked at him. We didn’t say anything.

We walked outside. The books felt heavier now, not from pages, but from places. Rock held his book with both feet, steady and serious. Nomi was already reading in the parking lot. I touched my boat-book cover. Smooth. Warm. And mine.

A book is the only thing that lets you go everywhere… even when you can’t go anywhere. The doors closed behind us, keeping the books warm ’til next time.

The Library Kingdom. Doors optional. Everywhere guaranteed.
