Episode 7 — The Hand Event

Mission Log 17. Pip recording.

The furnace hums beside the workbench vent while Brisk tests the eastern route with slow taps of his front legs. Nola waits beside the Dust Passage with both antennae raised. Fern is somewhere above them on the ceiling pipes.

Then Nola’s antennae snap upward. Both of them. Fully vertical.

“Ceiling activity,” she says. “Stairs.”

Pip looks toward the basement door. Light appears beneath it. Then the door opens.

Bright light floods the stairwell.

Pip steps back against the wall. Heavy footsteps descend the stairs. One. Two. Three. Four. The concrete floor shudders faintly with each step. Nola presses herself flat against the storage shelf.

“Large Ceiling Object descending,” she says.

The footsteps stop at the base of the stairs. A shadow passes across the eastern route. Brisk has not moved. He is standing beside the workbench leg in the open floor.

Then something appears beneath the workbench.

A hand.

Large fingers move slowly across the concrete floor. Pip lifts the route slate and holds the chalk crumb against it, ready to write. The hand moves toward Brisk. Brisk lowers himself completely flat against the concrete. Pip does not write anything.

The hand passes directly in front of Brisk. It stops beside the workbench leg. The fingers close around a small metal bolt resting in the dust. Then the hand lifts the bolt away and disappears above the workbench again.

Nobody moves.

Scraping sounds continue overhead. Brisk remains completely flat against the floor with one front leg extended and the other tucked beneath him. Fern lowers herself slowly from the ceiling pipe on a thin thread. She stops directly above Brisk and looks down at Pip. Pip is still holding the slate. The chalk crumb is still in his paw.

More scraping sounds above them.

Then footsteps again.

One. Two. Three. Four.

Back toward the stairs.

The bright stairwell light narrows. The basement door closes. The light disappears.

Nobody moves for a long moment.

Fern does not climb back toward the pipe. She hangs above Brisk while he raises himself from the floor. Brisk tests both front legs carefully.

“Operational,” he says.

Pip looks down at the slate. It is blank from the moment the hand appeared. He crosses the basement floor to the eastern route. The bolt is gone. Only a clean circle remains in the dust where it had rested.

Nola moves slowly away from the storage shelf. Both antennae test the air.

“Ceiling activity ended,” she says.

Pip stands beside the workbench for a long moment. Then he writes:

Hand Event. Upper-region retrieval. No casualties.

He closes the slate. The circle stays.
