The Pull Cord

Episode 8 — The Pull Cord

Mission Log 19. Pip recording.

A thin pull cord hangs from the basement ceiling near the stairs. It is already moving. Left. Then right. Then left again. Nothing is touching it.

Brisk stands beneath the swinging cord beside the storage shelf. The beetle does not move. He watches the plastic handle sweep slowly through the air above him while Pip hurries over with the route slate balanced against his tail. Nola arrives through the Dust Passage with both antennae raised.

“No Ceiling Tremor,” she says. “No footsteps. No door vibration.”

The cord keeps swinging. Left. Right. Left.

Fern lowers herself from the ceiling pipe on a thin thread. She stops beside the fixture above the cord.

“Single attachment,” she says quietly. “Connected above.”

Pip watches the moving handle carefully.

“Upper-region signal cord,” he says.

“Unconfirmed,” Brisk replies.

The movement grows smaller. Nola follows the swinging handle with one raised antenna.

“Movement slowing.”

Then the cord stops. It hangs perfectly still.

Nobody moves.

Brisk keeps watching the handle with one front leg lifting slowly off the concrete floor. Pip looks down at the slate.

“Observation pause beginning,” he starts writing.

Brisk jumps.

Both front legs leave the concrete floor at once. He lands hard and the floor vibrates beneath the storage shelf. Above them, the pull cord swings violently. Left. Right. Left. Farther than before.

Pip drops the chalk crumb. It bounces once across the concrete. Nola backs into the Dust Passage.

“Signal reactivated,” she says.

Brisk stares upward at the swinging cord. He jumps again, harder this time. The cord snaps sideways in a wide arc above them. Fern pulls herself one thread length to the side.

“Too much movement,” she says.

The plastic handle swings low across the basement air. Brisk jumps backward as it sweeps past his head. The cord twists once. Then again. Then stops crooked, no longer hanging straight beside the storage shelf.

Nobody moves.

The handle hangs at an angle while Brisk watches it carefully with one front leg still raised. Pip picks up the chalk crumb slowly. Fern does not climb back toward the pipe and Nola lowers one antenna toward the floor.

“No vibration present,” she says quietly.

The cord stays crooked. Brisk steps around the hanging handle without touching it.

“Tight clearance,” he says.

Pip writes one line on the slate.

Pull Cord: further observation required.

He closes the slate. The cord does not straighten.
