Episode 2 — The Soft Debris Event

Mission Log 7. Pip recording.

Brisk is already waiting beside the workbench when Pip arrives. The beetle stands completely still with both front legs pointed toward something large on the basement floor. A sock has fallen beside the workbench leg. The toe section curls inward slightly while the open end lies flat against the concrete. Part of the eastern route disappears beneath it. Brisk has not touched it yet.

“New object,” he says.

Pip hurries closer with the route slate balanced against his tail. His whiskers twitch as he circles the sock carefully. A dusty mark beside the workbench leg shows where it landed. Nola arrives through the Dust Passage with both antennae raised.

“No Ceiling Tremor,” she says quietly.

Pip looks toward the basement stairs. “Uncontrolled descent.”

Fern lowers herself from the ceiling pipe above them.

“One impact,” she says. “No movement after landing.”

Brisk walks around the sock without stepping onto it. The rounded toe section blocks most of the eastern route, leaving only a narrow gap beside the wall. Pip squeezes through sideways with the slate pressed against his chest.

“Tight clearance.”

Brisk tests the gap with one front leg.

“Passable.”

Pip places a chalk crumb beside the wall route, then another near the sock. The second crumb vanishes beneath the fabric edge immediately. Pip stops moving at once. Fern lowers another thread length.

“Toe section folding inward,” she says quietly.

The sock settles slightly flatter against the floor. Nobody touches it. Brisk steps closer anyway.

“Wait,” Pip says.

Brisk pushes before Pip finishes speaking. The sock slides suddenly across the dusty concrete floor, farther than Brisk expected. Dust lifts behind it in a long streak. Pip jumps backward as the fabric sweeps across his paws. The open end twists sideways. The eastern route disappears completely.

Nobody moves for several seconds.

Brisk stays low beside the sock with one front leg still pressed against the fabric. Nola lowers one antenna toward the floor.

“No vibration,” she says quietly.

Fern does not climb back toward the pipe. The sock settles slowly, then stops. Brisk pushes more carefully this time. The fabric bunches against the storage shelf in the corner, opening part of the route again, though not all of it.

Pip walks the narrow passage beside the wall. The slate scrapes once against the concrete and he stops halfway through.

“Tighter clearance,” he says.

Brisk tests the new opening with both front legs.

“Passable.”

Pip looks back toward the sock. The toe section still bulges partly into the route, not where it landed and not fully out of the way either. He writes one line on the slate.

Soft Debris relocated. Eastern route narrowed.

He closes the slate. The sock stays beside the shelf.
