Bob: Where are we today, Ted?
Ted: The Baker house…Maple Street. The ice cream truck is pulling away.
Bob: Sandy stands in the yard with four quarters in her hand.
Ted: That is too many quarters for a safe hold.
Bob: The music is fading.
Ted: You cannot carry four.
Bob: Sandy runs.
Ted: She’s at full speed Bob.
Bob: The coins bounce in her hand.
Ted: Loose money leaves. It always leaves.
Bob: One coin slips—
Ted: There it goes—
Bob: It drops in the grass.
Ted: It’s gone.
Bob: Sandy keeps running.
Ted: She is not stopping.
Bob: Another kid is at the window.
Ted: That is last place.
Bob: Sandy squeezes the coins tight.
Ted: Too tight.
Bob: Another coin shoots out—
Ted: It escaped.
Bob: Sandy opens her hand.
Ted: No.
Bob: Yes. Her hand is flat. The coins spread out.
Ted: That is not holding.
Bob: The coins stop moving.
Ted: No.
Bob: Yes. They stay still.
Ted: No.
Bob: Sandy runs with her hand open.
Ted: That does not count.
Bob: It’s working.
Ted: That is not allowed Bob.
Bob: The coins do not move.
Ted: We are not counting that.
Bob: Sandy runs faster.
Ted: Too fast.
Bob: The coins stay still.
Ted: No.
Bob: Yes. Sandy reaches the curb—
Ted: This decides it.
Bob: She lifts her hand—flat—
Ted: CLOSE YOUR HAND.
Bob: She doesn’t.
Ted: CLOSE YOUR HAND.
Bob: She keeps it open.
Ted: CLOSE YOUR HAND.
Bob: The driver takes the coins straight off her open hand. There was enough left.
Ted: …
Bob: None fall.
Ted: That did not happen.
Bob: He gives her the popsicle.
Ted: That should not count.
Bob: The wrapper tears open.
Ted: …
Bob: Sandy takes a bite.
Ted: …
Bob: Red juice runs down her wrist.
Ted: That counts.
Bob: The truck drives away.
Ted: It’s over.
Bob: Sandy stands at the curb, hand still open.
Ted: Do not close it.
Bob: She doesn’t.
Ted: Good.
Bob: The red drips down her fingers.
Ted: That is how it holds.
Bob; I guess that is the story.
