THE CAMPSITE
The Small Rangers, Episode 4
The call came in the previous afternoon.
Campsite Three. East shore. Vacated that morning.
Ellis copied the notice into the morning log before they left the dock.
Campsite Three inspection. Post-occupancy check.
WATCHFUL ran the east channel beneath a pale gray sky and tied up at the east shore landing. The campsite sat a short walk uphill through the pine trees.
Walt stopped at the fire ring first. He held the back of his hand above the ashes without touching them.
Then he looked at Ellis. “Warm.”
Ellis wrote it down immediately.
Fire ring still warm on inspection.
The ashes inside the ring looked pale and quiet, but when Walt stirred the surface lightly with a stick, faint orange color showed underneath near the center.
Ellis stopped writing and watched.
Walt headed toward the shoreline with the camp bucket. Lake water slapped softly against the rocks while he filled it.
The first bucket sent steam twisting up from two dark places beneath the ash.
Not much. But enough.
Walt filled the bucket again. The second pour produced less steam, though one corner of the fire ring still hissed quietly beneath the wet ash.
Ellis knelt closer without reaching toward it.
The fire did not look hot anymore. But it still was.
Walt walked back to the lake for a third bucket.
This time no steam rose at all. The ashes settled lower into the ring and turned completely dark.
Walt held his hand above the surface once more. “Cool.”
Ellis updated the notebook.
Fire ring extinguished. Three buckets required.
They checked the rest of the campsite one section at a time. The tent platform was clear except for a few pine needles gathered in the corners. The food storage post had been left unlatched. Walt closed it immediately and tested the latch once with both hands.
Sound.
At the picnic table, a folded paper bag held three empty food containers stacked neatly inside one another.
Clean.
Ellis noted that too.
A rope clothesline still hung between the storage post and a pine branch overhead. One side had twisted tighter in the wind during the night, pulling the rope lower across the campsite than before.
Walt untied both ends carefully and coiled the rope into even loops before placing it inside the equipment box beside the post.
The campsite was otherwise in good condition.
Before leaving the fire ring, Walt turned the empty bucket upside down beside the storage post to dry.
Ellis noticed that.
A pine needle drifted slowly down from the branches overhead and landed in the wet ash at the center of the fire ring.
It stayed there.
Ellis wrote the ranger note and placed it inside the campsite box.
Dear Visitors,
The fire ring at Campsite Three required additional water during inspection.
The clothesline rope has been stored in the equipment box for the next visitors.

Walt checked the equipment box latch before they left the campsite.
Sound.
They walked back down the pine path toward the shore while wind moved softly through the trees above them.
Behind them, the pine needle still rested in the center of the dark ash.
