THE SMALL RANGERS
Episode 12 — The Season Log

The last patrol of the season began at the east dock, the same as always.

Walt was already there when Ellis arrived. WATCHFUL’s winter cover was folded halfway back and the stern locker stood open beside him. The small tear along the port seam had already been repaired with a neat strip of canvas tape.

Ellis noticed it immediately.

Noted nowhere. Just done.

He checked the dock thermometer.

Thirty-one degrees. Recorded.

Then Ellis picked up the season log.

It was the same notebook he had carried since the first patrol in April. The cover had warped slightly from moisture over the summer. The first pages looked lighter than the later ones where the pencil had been replaced halfway through the season.

Ellis opened to the beginning.

Fishing line recovered from east reeds. Trail marker post four reset after overnight wind. Reed Crossing footbridge repaired after heavy rain. Campsite Three fire ring extinguished during inspection. Culvert Seven cleared before fall flooding. East dock ladder extended during low water. North trail map box occupied by wrens. WATCHFUL forward seat board replaced. Mallard and seven ducklings escorted safely past the launch ramp. North trail reinforced after heavy visitor traffic. First freeze assessment completed.

Ellis turned each page slowly while Walt prepared WATCHFUL beside the dock. Some entries had later notes written beside them in the margins.

Monitor. Follow-up required. Still sound.

One page still carried a faint water stain near the corner from the rain patrol earlier that spring. Ellis rested his hand there for a moment before turning to the next entry.

Then he closed the log.

Walt had already started the motor.

Second pull.

They ran the east channel first. The reeds were pale now, bent low near the waterline. At the dock, the collection tin beside the map box remained empty.

No material recovered this patrol.

Ellis wrote it down.

The north marker still stood straight beside the trail.

Sound.

At the south channel, Reed Crossing remained firm beneath their feet. Culvert Seven stayed clear. The low trail sections damaged during the rain patrol earlier that year had dried completely. Only the darker soil beside the edges still showed where water had crossed months before.

At the north trailhead, the map box stood closed properly again.

Ellis opened it carefully.

Current maps inside. Two pencils remaining.

One had been sharpened recently.

Ellis paused. That had not been in the previous inspection notes.

He looked once toward the empty trail behind him before closing the box again.

Enough until spring.

They returned to the dock before noon.

Walt began the winter sequence immediately.

Fuel lowered to storage level. Push-pole secured. Stern locker sealed. Bow line adjusted for winter tension.

Ellis recorded each item while Walt worked.

The winter cover went back on last. Walt checked every fastening point by hand before stepping back from the boat.

Sound.

Ellis wrote the final visitor note and placed it inside the dock box.

Visitors,

Pine Lake Ranger District remains open through the winter season.

Trails are marked and passable. Reed Crossing footbridge remains open. Boat launch access is available.

Ranger patrols resume in April.

Pine Lake Ranger District

Ellis opened the season log one final time.

Season complete. Forty-two entries recorded.

He added the date beneath it and closed the cover.

WATCHFUL rested beneath the winter cover at the second cleat. The lake was flat. The haze had lifted completely now, and from the dock Ellis could see all the way to the far reeds.
