THE SOFT BRIDGE
The Small Rangers, Episode 3
Three days of rain had ended during the night. Ellis wrote the conditions into the morning log while Walt loosened WATCHFUL from the second cleat.
Three days of rain. Check bridges and low trail sections.
Walt had already started the motor before Ellis finished writing.
The south channel sat higher than the previous Tuesday. Water pushed farther into the reeds along the shoreline, bending them low near the surface. At the channel mouth Ellis checked the gauge post beside the bank.
Up four inches.
Recorded.
They tied up at the south landing and followed the trail toward Reed Crossing.
The ground near the bridge felt soft underfoot. Ellis tested each step carefully before shifting his weight. Once his boot sank deep enough to leave water shining in the print after he stepped away.
Walt walked closer to the edge of the trail where the ground held firmer.
The bridge boards were dark from rain.
Ellis knelt beside the first plank and pressed both hands against it. The wood bent slightly beneath the pressure. He moved to the next board.
That one bent more.
Ellis stopped moving.
Below the bridge, rainwater rushed through the narrow stream channel much faster than usual. The sound filled the space beneath the planks.
Walt crouched near the bank and looked underneath the bridge. One of the support braces had pulled loose from the metal bracket beneath the center span. The wood itself was still solid.
Not broken.
Just separated.
Walt looked up once toward Ellis, then headed back down the trail toward WATCHFUL for the repair kit.
Ellis stayed beside the bridge. He walked across slowly, testing each plank one at a time before stepping fully onto the next.
The third board flexed softly beneath his weight.
The fourth gave a low creak.
Ellis stopped again and listened.
Water moved quickly below him.
He stepped back toward the near side and checked the rails with both hands.
Sound.
Four boards felt soft.
Two remained firm.
Ellis removed the closure sign from the pack and hung it carefully at the near end of the bridge.

Rainwater slid past the rocks below while they waited for Walt to return. Small pieces of bark moved through the current, disappeared beneath the bridge, then came out the other side.
Walt came back carrying the repair kit, the hand driver, and the timber brace from the stern locker.
By late morning the loose support bracket had been reset. Walt tightened the fasteners carefully, then braced the support underneath the center span.
When he finished, he stayed beneath the bridge another moment with one hand against the brace.
Then he climbed back onto the trail.
Ellis watched while Walt stepped onto the bridge again.
One plank.
Then another.
The boards held steady beneath his weight.
At the center span Walt stopped once and looked down toward the rushing water below before taking the final steps across.
The bridge held.
Ellis removed the closure sign and rolled it carefully back into the pack.
At the trailhead post he wrote the ranger note.
Dear Visitors,
The footbridge at Reed Crossing was closed this morning for repair following heavy rain.
The bridge is now open.

They walked the remaining south trail afterward. Two low sections still felt soft beneath the surface, though both remained passable. Ellis marked each one in the notebook for follow-up inspection.
By early afternoon they were back at WATCHFUL.
Ellis updated the condition log.
Reed Crossing repaired. Bridge reopened. Low trail sections still soft. Follow-up required.
The south channel still moved fast when they pulled away from the landing. Water pressed hard against the reeds along the bank.
Ellis looked back once toward the bridge before closing the notebook.
Still being watched.
