WHY HUMANS DRIVE

I’ve been watching what humans do when they leave in the big loud shell.

They climb inside it and close the doors behind them. Then they sit very still while the shell moves through the outside.

The shell stops and starts. It turns. It waits. Other things move around it.

But the humans stay inside the whole time.

Sometimes many humans travel inside the same shell together. Sometimes only one. They all face forward while the outside passes by on every side.

I have seen the shell stop while the humans still remain inside it. The world is there. Air. Smells. Open space. They still do not step out.

Sometimes the shell reaches the house and stays quiet for a while before anyone climbs out. The humans sit there looking forward through the front glass. Sometimes no one speaks. Then one of them moves, and the others follow.

They do not travel the way we do. They move through the outside without entering it properly. The shell carries them past everything while keeping the outside away from their bodies.

I think humans do not like crossing long distances uncovered. That is why they seal themselves inside the moving shell before they leave.

June (quietly): “Why do they stay inside when the shell stops?”

Walter: “Because the shell is still around them.”
